A federal tax on business profits, with registration and annual filing obligations. The headline rate is 9% above the taxable threshold — but exemptions, reliefs and free zone treatments mean your effective position depends on your structure.
Who does it apply to?
Most UAE businesses fall in scope; exemptions and reliefs (such as small business relief or free zone qualifying treatments) are case-specific. Don’t assume you’re out — confirm your position.
Mainland vs free zone treatment
Mainland companies are generally in scope under the standard treatment; free zone companies have a separate treatment with qualifying conditions — your position must be assessed on your actual structure and income.
Registration and filing basics
Register when required, keep proper books, and file within the set window. Missed registration or filing carries penalties — timing matters. Registration runs through the Federal Tax Authority; if you also deal with VAT, see our VAT Registration & Filing guide and the Corporate Tax vs VAT comparison.
What records you need
Clean, reconciled accounting records underpin every filing — see Accounting & Bookkeeping.

Who is exempt — and who isn’t
Generally exempt
Individuals earning salary, personal investment or real-estate income in a personal capacity; UAE federal and emirate government entities; approved public-benefit entities (charity, education, welfare); and qualifying free zone persons — free zone companies are not automatically exempt.
Generally in scope
Mainland companies with taxable income above AED 375,000; free zone companies earning non-qualifying income (for example mainland-sourced revenue); branches of foreign companies; and licensed freelancers above the threshold.
Qualifying free zone status: five conditions
For a free zone company to access 0% on qualifying income it must maintain adequate substance, earn qualifying income, avoid disallowed mainland business, comply with transfer-pricing rules, and file returns every year. Failing any single condition can pull all taxable income into the 9% band.
Common misconceptions

| Small businesses don’t need to register | Registration is mandatory |
| 0% tax means no filing | Annual filing is still required |
| Only large companies are affected | SMEs are equally in scope |
